This is my latest purchase from AliExpress and it cost me just £6.72, yes, less than £7.
This is a Nikon AI to Sony E-Mount lens adapter and it allows you to fit a Nikon AI Bayonet mount lens onto a Sony E-Mount camera body. Yes, it works and can take pictures every bit as good as if a Nikon camera or Sony Lens were used. It should work with even the oldest Nikon AI bayonet mount lens.
So how does it work and does it affect the characteristics of the lens?
The true focal length of your lens won’t change when using an adapter.
However, if you’re using a full frame sensor lens with an ASP-C or cropped sensor camera such as my Sony ZV-E10, this will change the equivalent or perceived focal length. The camera will apply a crop factor in the lens field of view so you can only capture a smaller part of it – your image will be cropped. This means that a lens that would be 50mm on a full frame sensor camera would effectively be about 70mm on an ASP-C sensor camera.
One thing to keep in mind is flange focal distance, which for an interchangeable lens camera is the distance from the mounting flange (the interlocking metal rings on the camera and the rear of the lens) to the film or image sensor plane. For Sony E-Mount cameras this is 18mm. Poorly designed adapters work as extension tubes and change the effective FFD of the lens allowing for a closer focusing point but meaning that infinity focusing is not possible. The design of this Fotga adapter creates the same flange distance to the sensor as a Sony lens would have and so maintains focusing capabilities.
So how do you use it?
Remember that there is no electronic interaction between the camera body and the lens. There is no autofocus and no aperture control. The only modes you can use are Manual and Aperture Priority. You have to manually focus the lens and set the aperture f-Stop on the lens itself but the camera can determine the required shutter speed if required. I always work in manual mode, setting the shutter speed first and then stopping the lens down to get the correct exposure using the camera body metering. Remember first to change the camera settings to allow shutter release with no lens fitted as the camera cannot detect that the lens is in place.
As far as I am aware the adapter should work with any Sony E-Mount camera and these are listed as compliant on the AliExpress product page - and I note that the ZV-E10 is not listed although the adapter works fine with it.
